Who Was Iqbal Masih? —How did he spark a revolution in the world of child labor?
When we hear the name Iqbal, many of us think of a poet.
But today, we speak of another Iqbal — a child whose fight lit up the world.

Born in 1983 in Muridke, Pakistan, Iqbal Masih’s life was chained by poverty from the start.
His mother worked in a carpet factory and took a loan of just 600 rupees — a decision that unknowingly sold her son into bonded labor.
At the age of 6, Iqbal was forced to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, in harsh, inhumane conditions.
If he disobeyed or slowed down, he was beaten.
When he tried to escape, they chained him.
But one day, he succeeded in running away and found help from the Bonded Labour Liberation Front.
There, Iqbal’s life transformed.
He resumed his education, and in just two years, he completed a four-year course — breaking records and gaining global attention.
This little boy, once shackled by oppression, now stood as a voice for freedom.
Iqbal began campaigning against child labor, traveling to Europe and the US, giving speeches, raising awareness.
He became the reason over 30,000 bonded child workers were set free.
In 1994, he received the “Reebok Human Rights Award” in America.
He had become a global icon for justice.
But Iqbal’s dream to become a lawyer and continue the fight was cut short.
On 16th April 1995, Iqbal Masih was shot and killed at the age of just 12.
His life was taken, but his legacy lived on.
In 2022, the Government of Pakistan finally honored him with the Tamgha-e-Shujaat (Medal of Bravery).
Yet today, many in Pakistan still don’t know his name.
Tagically, child labor has returned with force.
Over 20 million children in Pakistan are still trapped in bonded labor, suffering violence, abuse, and lifelong trauma.
But there is hope.
Since 2005, Shauoor Welfare Foundation has been working for the rights, rehabilitation, and education of such children.
Giving them a chance to grow, to learn, to live a life beyond labor — just like Iqbal dreamed.
Let us be the voice for voiceless children.
Let us honor Iqbal’s sacrifice not just with words, but with action.
Let us stand for freedom, for education, for justice.
Let us light the candle of awareness — and pass it on.
Because saving one child… is like saving all of humanity.

اقبال مسیح کون تھا؟
اقبال مسیح کون تھا؟ اس نے چائلڈ لیبر کی دنیا میں کیسے انقلاب برپا کیا؟
جب ہم اقبال کا نام سنتے ہیں تو ہمارے ذہن میں سب سے شاعر مشرق علامہ اقبال کا نام آتا ہے — لیکن آج ہم ایک اور اقبال کی بات کر رہے ہیں۔
ایک ایسا بچہ جو خود زنجیروں میں جکڑا ہوا تھا، لیکن دوسروں کی زنجیروں کو توڑ گیا۔
یہ ہے اقبال مسیح — پاکستان کا ننھا ہیرو، جو آج بھی دنیا کو جھنجھوڑ کر رکھ دیتا ہے۔
اقبال مسیح کی پیدائش 1983 میں شیخوپورہ کے علاقے مریدکے میں ہوئی۔
ان کی والدہ ایک قالین بنانے والی فیکٹری میں کام کرتی تھیں۔
غربت نے انہیں مجبور کیا کہ صرف 600 روپے قرض لیں — لیکن یہ رقم اقبال کے لیے ایک قیدِ حیات بن گئی۔
چھ سال کی عمر میں، اقبال کو قرض نہ چکانے کی پاداش میں فیکٹری میں کام پر لگا دیا گیا۔
روزانہ 12 گھنٹے، ہفتے کے ساتوں دن کام کروایا جاتا۔
مار پیٹ، زنجیروں میں جکڑنا، اور بھاگنے کی صورت میں شدید تشدد — یہ سب اس ننھے جسم پر معمول بن چکا تھا۔
لیکن قسمت نے ایک دن کروٹ لی —
اقبال نے ایک بار پھر بھاگنے کی کوشش کی، اور اس بار وہ پہنچا مزدور بچوں کے فلاحی ادارے کے پاس، جہاں اس جیسے بچوں کو بچایا جاتا تھا۔

یہاں سے اقبال کی زندگی بدلی، سوچ بدلی، اور وہ خود بھی تبدیلی بن گیا۔
اقبال نے چار سال کا کورس صرف دو سال میں مکمل کیا اور دنیا کو حیران کر دیا۔
وہ بچہ جسے زنجیروں میں جکڑا گیا، اب بچوں کے حقوق کے لیے آواز بن چکا تھا۔
اس نے دنیا کے ترقی یافتہ ممالک کے دورے کیے،
30000 سے زائد بچوں کو آزادی دلوائی،
امریکہ میں ایوارڈز جیتے،
سوئیڈن میں تقریریں کیں،
اور دنیا بھر میں پاکستان کا نام روشن کیا۔
لیکن، وہ جو وکیل بننا چاہتا تھا…
اس کی آواز خاموش کر دی گئی۔
16 اپریل 1995 کو صرف 12 سال کی عمر میں،
اسے گولی مار کر چپ کروا دیا گیا۔
دنیا نے اسے یاد رکھا، ایوارڈز دیے، اور بالآخر 2022 میں حکومتِ پاکستان نے اسے تمغہ شجاعت سے نوازا۔
لیکن آج، اسی پاکستان میں، اقبال مسیح کو بہت کم لوگ جانتے ہیں۔
اور آج پھر وہی اندھیرا لوٹ آیا ہے —
جبری مشقت، مارپیٹ، چائلڈ لیبر، اور غربت کا دائرہ تنگ تر ہو چکا ہے۔
دو کروڑ سے زائد بچے پاکستان میں اب بھی مزدوری پر مجبور ہیں۔
شعور ویلفیئر فاؤنڈیشن 2005 سے ان بچوں کے لیے کام کر رہی ہے —
ایسے بچوں کو مشقت کی بجائے محبت، تعلیم اور تربیت فراہم کی جا رہی ہے، تاکہ وہ بھی اقبال مسیح کی طرح اپنی تقدیر بدل سکیں۔
آئیں، آج ہم اقبال مسیح کی جدوجہد کو جاری رکھیں۔
اس کے نقشِ قدم پر چلیں، اور ان معصوم بچوں کی زندگیوں میں امید، تعلیم اور حفاظت کا چراغ روشن کریں۔

مزدور بچوں کی بحالی — کیونکہ ہر بچے کو بچپن گزارنے کا حق ہے۔
اقبال آج بھی زندہ ہے — ان بچوں کی مسکراہٹوں میں، ان کی آزاد سانسوں میں، اور آپ کی مدد سے۔
شعور ویلفیئر فاؤنڈیشن نے ایک پُراثر تقریب کا انعقاد کیا جس کا عنوان تھا:
“اقبال مسیح کی یاد میں – چائلڈ لیبر کے خلاف جرأت کی علامت”
یہ تقریب الحمرہ ہال، ادبی بیٹھک، لاہور آرٹس کونسل میں 14 اپریل 2025 کو منعقد ہوئی
